The Checkers Speech

 Richard Nixon made an early, innovative use of television in 1952. He had a political fund -- what we would today call a PAC -- and opponents accused him of doing something shady. Nixon did lots of questionable stuff later on, but in this case, he was innocent of wrongdoing.  He explained that he did not use the fund to line his pockets, and that the only personal gift he accepted was a dog named Checkers.
